Armenians have started to produce beer since ancient times. Greek Historian, Xenophon commemorated in his references that he tasted this drink in Armenia, and also wrote about the methods of making it. Also, he noted Armenian wine that was strong and the favorite drink for the locals. But the fatherland of the light alcoholic beverage is Iran due to recordings. Besides the fact that the beer has a non-Armenian origin, it is one of the favorite drinks for the locals.

This beverage is considered to be one of the oldest and the third most popular drink in the world after water and tea. It is brewed from cereal grains, commonly from malted barley, also wheat, rice, and corn. There are many types of beer; it can have a dark or light color, sweet or bitter taste. People say that they dream about this cold drink when they are thirsty.

This drink was mentioned in the history of Egypt and ancient Iraq. According to the recordings, during the building of the Great Pyramids, each worker got beer daily which was both nutrition and refreshment.

Armenian Beer

The first beer factory opened in Yerevan in 1892 which was famous as the "Zanga" factory and located on the bank of Hrazdan River. The name of the beverage was "Bok," but in 1920 the factory closed.

Now, this light drink is the fourth favorite drink in Armenia.

In 1952 opened the largest factory in Armenia which was called "Kilikia." It is the most popular product in Armenian history. This company acquired 30 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze medals in many international exhibitions. In 1999 the International Organization “BID” awarded the “Beer Yerevan” company by giving them the “Golden Star” prize. The factory's product awarded as "Best Quality" in 2001, Frankfurt.

The other popular Armenian beers are"Gyumri", "Ararat", "Alexandrapol", all the products are being produced in Gyumri's factory which is located in Shirak Region. It was opened in 1970 and considered to be the second-largest company in Armenia.

"Kotayk" Factory is also of the famous producers of Armenian Beer. It was opened in 1974, in Abovyan city.

We even have a unique festival dedicated to this drink. During the festival, the participants taste different drinks, eat tasty sausages and crayfishes, also play different fun games. After the treatment, there is a great party, which makes the festival more interesting.
