Jermuk Waterfall

Jermuk Waterfall

The Jermuk Waterfall, widely known as the "Mermaid’s Hair," is one of Armenia’s most poetic natural landmarks. Tucked away in the Vayots Dzor region at an altitude of 2,000 meters, it cascades down a cliff from a height of approximately 70 meters.

Unlike vertical drops that crash straight down, the water here flows gracefully over the smooth, inclined rocks of the Arpa River gorge, creating a shimmering, silver effect that truly resembles flowing locks of hair.

The name "Mermaid’s Hair" comes from a haunting local legend. It tells the story of a beautiful princess who fell in love with a humble shepherd. Her father, a nobleman, was so enraged by the match that he cursed her, declaring that if she ever saw her lover again, she would turn into a mermaid. In an act of defiance, the princess tried to help the shepherd climb the steep cliffs to her window by letting down her long, thick braids. As she did, the curse took hold; she was transformed, and her hair turned into the cascading streams that visitors see today.

Visiting the waterfall is a refreshing experience, both literally and figuratively. Even in the heat of a summer afternoon, the mist rising from the gorge keeps the air crisp and the water icy cold. The site is a primary highlight of Jermuk, a town famous for its healing mineral waters and sanatoriums. While the waterfall is stunning year-round, it is particularly powerful in late spring and early summer when the mountain snowmelt is at its peak.

For travelers, the waterfall is easily accessible and remains a favorite spot for photography and quiet reflection. It represents more than just a geological feature; it is a symbol of the wild, romantic spirit of the Armenian highlands. Whether you are drawn by the scientific marvel of its unique flow or the folklore that surrounds it, the "Mermaid’s Hair" stands as a must-see stop in the southern heart of the country.
