Aygr Lake is located in Armavir province, in the northern part of the Ararat plain, at an altitude of about 860 m above sea level. The lake formed thanks to underground freshwater springs emerging from the southern foothills of Aragats into the Ararat plain. The northern shore is elevated and rocky, while the other shores are low-lying.
The lake's surface area is about 0.03 km², its maximum depth is 9.4 m, its catchment basin covers about 5 km², and its water volume is about 310,000 m³. For the small Aygr–Metsamor basin, about 187 species of higher flowering plants from 44 families and 104 genera have been recorded. Aquatic, marsh, halophyte, desert, and semi-desert plant groupings occur side by side here.
The design of Aygr Lake's pumping (water-intake) station belongs to the renowned architect Alexander Tamanian.
