The Sevan Botanical Garden is located in the town of Sevan, Gegharkunik province. It was founded in 1944. It lies at an altitude of about 2,000 m.
The garden's main purpose is the introduction of plants from various geographical regions and the study of their adaptability under Sevan's harsh climatic conditions. Over the decades, a rich collection especially of cold-hardy trees and shrubs has been formed here. According to the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, the tree-and-shrub collections of the botanical gardens of Yerevan, Vanadzor, and Sevan together include about 1,170 species.
The garden grows both plants characteristic of the Sevan basin and trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants introduced from other regions of Armenia and abroad. According to international records, about 650 plant taxa have been represented here.
The Sevan Botanical Garden today also plays an important role in the ex-situ conservation of rare plants. Specimens of the Amulsar population of the pink cinquefoil (Potentilla porphyrantha), included in Armenia's Red Book, have been transferred to the botanical gardens of Yerevan and Sevan. 1,125 specimens were transferred to the Sevan garden.
