The site of Old Khot village is located in Syunik province, next to the present-day village of Khot, on the steep left-bank mountainside of the Vorotan river. The settlement is set within a rocky natural environment.
[The dwellings are] caves. People used, for dwelling, the natural and modified caves formed within the local volcanic rock, and later expanded them with stone masonry. For this reason, in some parts of the village, the residential structures are a combination of the rock mass and stone-built walls, creating the impression that the houses continue on into the rock itself.
Around the old village are burial fields and ancient cemeteries dating to the 2nd–1st millennia BC. The ruins of the Karmir (Red) Monastery, built in the 12th century, have survived.
According to the same source presenting Stepanos Orbelian's information, in 1006 Prince Dlen donated the village of Khot and the large orchard of Khotaget to Ter Hovhannes, Bishop of Tatev, and to Surb Nshan. In the 13th century, Khot is again mentioned among the villages restored to Tatev Monastery.
The village was finally abandoned in the 20th century.
