Hogevank (Karmir Vank)

Hogevank (Karmir Vank)

Hogevank, also known as Karmir Vank (Red Monastery), is located in Shirak Province, about 3 km northwest of the village of Sarnaghbyur. The largest surviving structure today is St. Karapet Church, built in 1205, though the complex contains layers from earlier periods. About 50 meters north of the main church, the lower courses of the walls of a 5th-century single-nave church and a 7th-century four-apse church have been preserved.

The 1205 church is a domed-hall type structure. In the east is a semicircular main apse, flanked on both sides by rectangular, vaulted side chapels. The church has western and northern entrances, and its façades are articulated with deep niches. Red dressed tuff was used in the main masonry.

The monument's ground plan has survived: it consists of adjoining apses, each 2.5 m in diameter, externally enclosed within trihedral (three-faced) walls — a feature that sets Hogevank apart among the small four-apse monuments of the early period.

As for the church's exterior decoration, only a single cornice fragment survives, bearing a basket-weave motif.

On the grounds of St. Karapet Church, sculpted fragments of 4th–5th-century four-sided stelae and 13th-century khachkars (cross-stones) have been preserved, though their inscriptions have become illegible over time.
