The Royal Mausoleum of the Arshakunis is located in the village of Aghdzk in the Aragatsotn Province, near the Aparan–Ashtarak road. It is also known as the Royal Mausoleum of Aghdzk.
According to the historian Pavstos Buzand, the Persian king Shapur II attempted to take the remains of the Armenian kings to Persia, after which Vasak Mamikonyan brought them back to the homeland. In this way, the kings' remains were reburied at Aghdzk, where the mausoleum was then built.
The first excavations in the area were carried out in 1973. Above the entrances one can see carvings of birds, legendary figures, and sculptures of rams and other animals.
