The Vahagn and Astghik waterfalls are located in Ararat province, on the territory of the "Khosrov Forest" State Reserve. The reserve includes the basins of the Azat and Vedi rivers, and under state statute one of the main purposes of its protection is precisely to ensure the natural development of the water and land ecosystems of those basins.

Several other waterfalls are also found within the reserve, and this group of waterfalls is also known as the Aghjots waterfalls.

In ancient Armenian mythology, Astghik was associated with love and beauty, while Vahagn was associated with courage, war, thunder, and dragon-slaying. In ancient Armenian mythology, the love of Vahagn and Astghik was considered a sacred union that brought life, rain, harvest, and good fortune to the land.
