The Symphony of Stones

The Symphony of Stones

Symphony of Stones, located in the Garni Gorge, is a majestic natural monument in the Kotayk province of Armenia.

This geological wonder was formed millions of years ago through the slow cooling and crystallization of volcanic lava, resulting in a cliffside of massive, symmetrical basalt columns.

The columns, which can reach heights of up to 50 meters, are arranged in such a way that they resemble a giant pipe organ. Because of this rhythmic, vertical appearance, the locals and visitors alike have named it the "Basalt Organ" or the "Symphony of Stones."

The site is situated along the banks of the Azat River, which is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

While the nearby Garni Temple represents the architectural triumph of man, the Symphony of Stones stands as a masterpiece of nature. The precision of the hexagonal and pentagonal stone tubes is so perfect that many find it hard to believe they were not carved by hand.

The Symphony is not just a geological site but an integral part of the picturesque Garni landscape. The area is characterized by deep canyons, rushing water, and steep cliffs. The harmony between the sound of the river and the visual "music" of the stones creates a unique atmosphere that has made it one of the most photographed natural sites in the Republic of Armenia.

In recent years, the area has been improved with a paved road and night-time illumination, allowing the "pipes" of the organ to be visible even after sunset. It remains a primary destination for those exploring the spiritual and natural treasures of the Kotayk region.
