Tegher Monastery was built between 1213 and 1232 on the eastern slopes of Mount Aragats, commissioned by Mamakhatun, wife of Prince Vache Vachutian. Constructed of dark grey-black tuff, its main church of Surb Astvatsatsin is flanked by a gavit with two domed chapels at its corners—an unusual and elegant design. The site is quieter and less visited than its famous neighbors, lending it a peaceful atmosphere. From its hillside perch it offers one of the finest panoramas of the Ararat valley, with Mount Ararat itself visible on clear days. Fine khachkars (cross-stones) dot the grounds.
