Church of St Mary the Virgin, Aygavan

  • Republic of Armenia, Ararat Province, Vedi Municipality, Aygavan village

Located in the village of Aygavan, within the Vedi Community of Ararat Province, the Church of St. Mary the Virgin is a notable example of the vernacular religious architecture once widespread across the Ararat Plain. Its design and construction techniques suggest that the church was built sometime during the 18th–19th centuries.

Unlike larger stone-built churches, the structure was constructed primarily from mudbrick. Its simple rectangular interior is organized as a single hall, supported by wooden columns. Another distinctive feature is the traditional gabled roof, covered with a layer of earth—a practical construction method characteristic of rural architecture in the region.

The church stands in the central part of Aygiavan, a settlement established in 1828 that has carried its present name since 1946. Beyond its architectural value, the building is closely connected with the history of the local community and offers a tangible link to the village's earlier way of life.

Today, the church is in a severely deteriorated condition, with parts of the structure having fallen into ruin. Despite its current state, it remains an important element of Aygavan's cultural landscape and a valuable surviving example of traditional earthen church construction in the Ararat Plain.
