Sevsar is located in the western part of the Vardenis mountain range, about 3 km east of the Vardenyats (formerly Selim) mountain pass, within the administrative territory of the village of Geghhovit. It lies at an altitude of about 2,600–2,700 m above sea level. It is especially known for its petroglyphs.
The site was discovered by Suren Petrosyan in 1965. The distinctive petroglyph in the central part, with a surface area of 6 square meters, depicts, according to Benik Tumanyan, the Milky Way. There is a hypothesis that the crater of Sev Sar, located near the petroglyphs, was formed as a result of a meteorite impact.
In 2021, Mark Frincu, Raoul Perez-Enriquez, and Levon Aghikyan again studied Sevsar's central petroglyph. They identified a deep hollow where, theoretically, a vertical rod — a gnomon — could have been placed. The authors compared the dimensions of the concentric circles with the possible lengths of shadows at the solstices and equinoxes of the Late Bronze Age and proposed that the image could have been used as a tool for solar observations.
In the overall complex of petroglyphs of the Gegham mountains, images dating from the late Neolithic to the Iron Age are present.
