Shushanavank is located in Armavir province, on the territory of the village of Bagaran, on a rocky height above the left bank of the Akhuryan river, right in the border zone with Turkey. Shushanavank is dated to the 10th–11th centuries.
According to tradition, the church was so named by the local prince after his daughter Shushan went missing.
The complex's main structure is the six-apse, centrally-domed Surb Shushan church — an original church with a six-apse plan. The interior space is organized around apses arranged around the central domed section. The church had at least two arched entrances, western and southwestern.
During a 2023 site survey, specialists recorded, adjoining the southwestern apse of the six-apse church, the remains of another, four-apse structure.
Today the church can only be approached from the east, via a difficult, rocky road, and only with special permission.
