Mashtots Hayrapet Church

Mashtots Hayrapet Church

The church known as "Mashtots Hayrapet" in Garni is located in the village of Garni, Kotayk province. The complex is dated to the 12th–13th centuries. Traditionally it has been called "Mashtots Hayrapet" after Catholicos Mashtots, who died in 897, but inscriptions show that the structure's real name was Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), and in the 14th century it was also recorded as the monastery of Sumpents.

Numerous 13th–14th-century inscriptions have survived on the church's walls and on nearby monuments. Several of them concern donations and economic relations.

In the church's courtyard are carved khachkars (cross-stones), one of which bears the date 1200. Next to the church a memorial stone with an inset khachkar has also been built.
