The "Vordan Karmir" State Reserve is located in Armavir province, in the salt-marsh areas of the Ararat plain. It was established on February 2, 1987. Within its current boundaries the reserve covers 219.85 hectares and consists of two separate sections: the Arazap section, 198.33 hectares, and the Jrarat section, 21.52 hectares. The territory lies at an altitude of about 835–850 meters above sea level.
Over time the climate has changed, and in a number of areas a retreat of salt-marsh (halophyte) vegetation has been observed. In some areas, plants characteristic of moist conditions have spread in place of halophyte species.
Among the dominant species in the plant cover are representatives of the genera Halostachys, Salicornia, and Halocnemum. Alongside these, common reed (Phragmites australis) is also found, as well as other herbaceous plants.
