The Church of Saint James is located in the village of Ararat, Ararat Province. It was built in 1866 at the initiative of Armenians who had emigrated from the city of Makú in Persia, and is one of the community's important historical, cultural and spiritual centres.
The church is a basilica-type structure, its interior divided into three naves by two rows of three columns each. On either side of the semi-circular apse are rectangular side chapels, and next to the left-hand chapel, the baptismal font has been preserved. On either side of the apse are arched recesses.
The building has three entrances: northern, western and southern. It is built of local grey travertine stone, and the interior walls are plastered with lime mortar. The church remains one of the valuable architectural and historical monuments of Ararat Province.
