The Kechut Reservoir is located in Vayots Dzor province, in the valley of the Arpa river, not far from Jermuk. It was built in connection with the Arpa–Sevan water-transfer system and was put into operation in 1981. The dam is a rock-fill (earthfill) dam, about 50 m high and 230 m long. The total volume is 22.5 million m³, the usable volume is 3.5 million m³, and the surface area is 1.2 km².
From the Kechut Reservoir, water is first carried by Tunnel No. 1 to the Yeghegis water conduit, where it joins the flow of the Yeghegis river, and then, via Tunnel No. 2, reaches Lake Sevan. The total tunnel length of the Arpa–Sevan system is about 48.3 km.
It is fed by the Arpa river and by atmospheric precipitation. The Kechut Reservoir has both economic and ecological significance, and its operating regime is also meant to help maintain the ecological balance of Lake Sevan.
The 7th-century church of the old village of Kechut has remained under the waters of the Kechut Reservoir.
