The Azat Reservoir is located in Ararat province, on the middle course of the Azat river, near the village of Lanjazat. It was put into operation in 1976. The reservoir lies at an altitude of about 1,050 m above sea level and is used to irrigate the agricultural areas of the Ararat plain. It lies within an active seismic zone, in the area of influence of the Garni–Yelpin and Yerevan fault systems.
The reservoir's designed total volume is 70 million m³, and its usable volume is about 61 million m³. It was created on the Azat river, and its dam is an earthfill structure.
According to data from the RA Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, it supplies water to the Azat four-stage pumping station and the Dvin canal, through which about 1,470 hectares are irrigated. In addition, it feeds the Artashat main canal and in this way participates in supplying water to the Sevan–Hrazdan irrigation system.
One of the problems during the reservoir's operation is sediment accumulation. Over about 45 years, sediment accumulated in the reservoir has reduced its designed volume by about 2.8 million m³.
In 2025–2026, a management and safety modernization program was also carried out at the Azat Reservoir. New hydrological measuring devices, weather stations, and warning systems have been installed.
