Proshaberd Fortress (Bolorabert)

Proshaberd Fortress (Bolorabert)

Proshaberd, or Bolorabert, fortress is located in Vayots Dzor province, about 7–8 km northeast of the village of Vernashen, on the conical summit of Mount Takeadondura (Srkghunk). The fortress is built in a naturally protected, elevated position, at an altitude of about 2,900 m above sea level.

The first mention of the fortress was left by the historian Stepan Orbelian. Speaking of the Atashkholgha invasion, he writes: "Reaching the middle of the district of Vayots Dzor, near the rocky hill situated between the Yeghegis and Mozan rivers, because of the strength of the place, they caused great bloodshed."

There is no precise information about the construction of Bolorabert. The fortress's position was chosen so that a circle of about 10–12 km radius encompasses the fortresses of Norashen, Yeghegnadzor, Agarakadzor, and Smbataberd. These lay within observational sight of one another and most likely had links of mutual communication.

On the western side of Bolorabert, on the plain, the traces of an ancient settlement can also be seen.

On the eastern side of the hill, the ruins of a small chapel have survived. The area enclosed within the fortress's perimeter walls covers approximately 1.5 hectares. Sections of the walls and the remains of towers have survived. Traces of a water-supply system — pipes — have also survived inside the fortress, testifying that in the event of a prolonged siege, the fortress had its own independent water supply.

All of Bolorabert's structures are built of grayish-blue basalt boulders. The walls are laid in semi-worked, horizontally placed rectangular stones and filled with lime mortar.

Bolorabert fortress resembles, in its position, the Apana and Aghjkaberd fortresses of Syunik. Today, mainly the remains of the defensive system have survived at Proshaberd — sections of the walls, towers, and traces of the water-supply system.
