Amberd Fortress

Amberd Fortress

Amberd is one of Armenia's most dramatic medieval fortresses, standing on a triangular promontory between two river gorges high on the southern slopes of Mount Aragats. Its earliest walls date to the 7th century, while the Pahlavuni and Bagratuni princely families expanded it into a major stronghold. Beside the citadel stands the Vahramashen Church, built in 1026 by Vahram Pahlavuni. The site also preserves the remains of a bathhouse, water system and secret passages. The breathtaking mountain setting, with views into deep valleys on both sides, makes the drive up well worth it.
