Sardarapat Memorial

The Sardarapat Memorial commemorates the decisive Battle of Sardarabad in May 1918, when Armenian forces and volunteers halted an advancing Ottoman army and secured the survival of an independent Armenian state. Unveiled in 1968, the monument is a powerful ensemble of red tufa: a bell tower, rows of winged bulls and eagles, and a victory avenue, designed to evoke resilience and national rebirth. On the same grounds stands the National Museum of Armenian Ethnography and the History of the Liberation Struggle, with rich collections of folk art, carpets and artifacts. Set on the open plain near the Turkish border, Sardarapat is a place of deep national significance.
