Saint Gayane Church
Saint Gayane Church, completed in 630 under Catholicos Ezra, stands a short walk from the Etchmiadzin cathedral and forms part of the same UNESCO World Heritage listing. It honors St. Gayane, the elder and leader of the group of Christian virgins martyred under King Trdat III. Built as a graceful three-nave domed basilica, the church is admired for its harmonious proportions and dignified simplicity, with later additions including an arched portico sheltering the tombs of catholicoi. Quieter than the main cathedral, with a pleasant garden, it offers a more contemplative atmosphere while remaining one of the defining monuments of Armenian sacred architecture.
