Day 1

Stop 1.Gyumri City Tour

The second city of Armenia, Gyumri, which was also called Leninakan, Alexandrapol, and in the original Armenian version Kumayri, was inhabited since the 3rd millennium. Having travelled a very long historical path, Gyumri presents itself today with its Old Town, which is best preserved in the city centre. Every building in Gyumri has its history, which is rich in Armenian medieval architectural spirit. This tourist city is attractive because of its beautiful buildings, streets, churches, and, of course, its unrepeatable, unique Gyumri mood; after all, Gyumri is the centre of humour, arts and crafts of Armenia. The three famous churches of Gyumri and the Black Fortress are also included in the city tour.

Stop 2.The Dzithoghonts House-Museum

The Dzithoghonts House-Museum is a cultural and historical site located in the Vayots Dzor region of Armenia. It is dedicated to the life and work of Aram Khachaturian, one of Armenia’s greatest composers. The house, once the residence of Khachaturian, has been converted into a museum where visitors can explore exhibits related to his musical career, his compositions, and his contributions to Armenian and global music. The museum also features memorabilia, photographs, and personal items of the composer. It serves as both a tribute to Khachaturian’s legacy and a valuable cultural resource for those interested in Armenian music history.

Stop 3.Black Fortress

The Black Fortress is a defensive fortress built of black stone. It was built in 1834 after the Second Russian-Persian War. The drainage system, which protected the castle's walls from rain, deserves special attention. The Black Fortress, now turned into a tourist center, reminds visitors of its military past.

Stop 4.Marmashen

The Marmashen monastic complex is situated on the left bank of the Akhuryan River, which for centuries has been one of the most important cultural and spiritual centers of Shirak province. Marmashen was built in the 10th century, during the reign of Vahram Pahlavuni, which historian and geographer Stepanos Asoghik testifies. The monastery consisted of four churches, a vestibule, a bell tower and a cemetery. Over the centuries, the Marmashen monastic complex was repeatedly attacked by foreign conquerors, Seljuk-Turks, and Mongols. Unfortunately, these attacks led to the loss of the monastic complex's former significance and appearance.
