The State Russian Drama Theatre named after Konstantin Stanislavsky opened in 1937 and took the name of the great Russian director in 1938. Its founder and first artistic director was Levon Kalantar. The theatre is at 7 Abovyan Street in the Kentron district, next to Charles Aznavour Square, on the site of a Russian church that was demolished to make way for it. Its repertoire is performed in Russian and centers on Russian classics, with Armenian classics staged in Russian as well. The legendary actor Armen Jigarkhanyan began his career on this stage.
