The Sos Sargsyan Hamazgayin Theatre was founded in 1991 by the celebrated Armenian actor Sos Sargsyan, whose name it carries. For 35 years, it had no building of its own and performed on the premises of the Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinematography.
Construction of a dedicated home began in 2019, designed by architect Isahak Nersisyan and funded by the state budget and private donors. The new building opened on January 23, 2026, with Maurice Maeterlinck’s “The Miracle of Saint Anthony.” It has a main auditorium of over 230 seats on the second floor and a small experimental stage on the ground floor, along with modern lighting and sound systems. The theatre marks its 35th anniversary in 2026. Its first season in the new building included the premiere of “Penelope, Oh, Penelope,” by French-Armenian playwright Simon Abgarian.
